We may live without poetry, music and art;We may live without conscience,
and live without heart;
We may live without friends;
we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks.
- Owen Meredith, 'Lucile'
Wikipedia identifies Owen Meredith as the pen name of Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton. He was a British statesman and poet in the mid 19th century...Now I know a little about yet another person I didn't know yesterday.
This quote struck me a couple years ago when I first read it...as someone who loves to cook, it does stroke the ego!
As a poet himself, Mr. Meredith must have really believed in this sentiment, since the first thing he mentions 'civilized man' can live without is poetry!
